AbbVie, the biopharmaceutical company that bought Coolsculpting manufacturer Allergan, advertises CoolSculpting as a nonsurgical procedure intended to reduce stubborn fat bulges “in the areas that bother you most."

The lawsuits allege that the company has known since at least 2011 that the device can cause consumers to develop a condition called Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH), which results in the opposite effect of the medical device’s advertised purpose.

CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive method of reducing fat in certain areas of the body by exposure to extremely cold temperatues. It has been advertised as a safer alternative to fat-reduction surgeries such as liposuction.

CoolSculpting® customers who say they were deformed by the weight loss technology and now need expensive corrective surgery have filed lawsuits against the product’s manufacturer.

Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia ("PAH") is a potential side effect of CoolSculpting® where the treated area develops a firm, noticeable mass instead of achieving the desired results of fat reduction. PAH does not resolve on its own. The only treatment option for PAH is expensive, invasive surgery such as liposuction.
